Innovation for Autistic Child

(Human Computer Interaction Project)

The interventions will be focused on children with autism. Interactive games will be used to teach these children. The applications will be made for Windows based computers along with Kinetic Sensor. Hand gestures will be used to play the games. Children with autism face a lot of difficulties in learning social behavior and Bangladeshi culture. Teachers make yearlong plans to teach these children basic etiquette and behavior. These children are visually oriented so teachers use a lot of pictures to teach any sorts of social behavior and cultural activities. Although this procedure is fun and interactive still it takes a lot of time for children to grasp it. They are also very interested in playing computer games and using different technology based devices. Our applications can motivate children to learn all these things in a fun and interactive way with an environment of their liking. Our initial plan was to build some puzzle games with interactive graphics and animations containing many levels. But we found out that there are very limited number of applications focusing on teaching children about Bangladeshi culture and social behavior. Also too much animations and effects cause distraction to the children. So now we have decided to build applications with simple but interactive interface which can teach children about Bangladeshi culture.

Key Features:
  • Interactive games (Q/A games, matching picture games) to teach children about Bangladeshi fruits
  • Pictures and short stories to teach children about etiquette and social behavior (e.g: how to greet someone, how to eat in a restaurant, how to brush teeth, what to wear every season, how to cross road, traffic rules)
  • Use cheerful sounds and voices to motivate children while playing with the app
  • Both English and Bangla interface in the app.
Stakeholders:
  • Teachers working in schools for autistic children
  • Parents/siblings of the children
  • Volunteers working with NGO’s for autistic children
Interventions:
  • Windows application
  • Desktop (Windows OS)
  • Kinect for Windows v2 Sensor
  • Projector
